FESTIVAL RULES

1 Traditional signifies that tunes must be in the Scottish idiom.

2 Players will only be permitted to compete more than once in any class provided that a different instrument is played on each occasion.

3 Trios will consist of Accordion, Fiddle and ONE of the following:

Piano, Double Bass, Electric Bass Guitar.

4 Bands will consist of 4 to 6 players and must include Accordion and Fiddle.

5 Fiddle Groups will consist of 4 to 7 players. Only stringed instruments will be permitted, including Acoustic Piano and Electric Bass Guitar.

6 The Open Button Key Accordion Solo class is for instruments of the British Chromatic/Melodeon type only, (ie in/out bellows movement produces a different note). Instruments of Continental Chromatic type are not eligible for this class.

7 Other than Electric Bass Guitar, no electronic devices will be permitted.

8 Own Composition class is open to competitors of any age. One copy of tune to be forwarded with entry form no later than 1 February 2009. Piano accompaniment will be permitted if instrument played is a fiddle.

9 Piano accompaniment is permitted for all Solo Fiddle classes, although no official accompanist will be available. If known, the name of accompanist should be provided on entry form.

10 The classification “Junior” signifies up to 16 years of age on the day of the competition. “Senior” classes are for players 16 years and over on the day of the competition (ie, Senior classes are not open). In classes 7,14,15,23,26,28 and 30, the classification “Open” includes competitors of any age.

11 Photography, tape recording and video recording are strictly forbidden as per British Federation of Music Festival rules.

12 The piece selected for classes 27-28 must be a classical Polka. Copies of pieces chosen are not required for the adjudication in classes 27-30.

13 All competitors in the classical classes (except Polka and Musette classes – see rule 12) are required to submit 1 original copy of their chosen piece for the use of the adjudicator. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

14 As per British Federation of Music Festival rules: “No photocopies will be accepted unless accompanied by written authority from the publishers. Arrangements can only be accepted if accompanied by written authority of the publisher”.

15 Unless unavoidably prevented from doing so, competitors must report to play in the correct position as set out in the programme. Failure to do so will lead to disqualification.

16 Completed entry forms with stamp addressed envelopes must be returned to Mrs L Mair, NAAFC Festival, 7 Lathro Lane, Kinross KY13 8RX (Telephone 01577 862337) by no later than 1 February 2009. Any forms received after this date will only be accepted at the discretion of the Committee.

17 Please make cheques payable to NAAFC Musselburgh Festival.

18 On arrival competitors should register at the Reception Desk in the Main Foyer.

19 In all cases, the adjudicator’s decision is final.

OVERALL SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHIES

The overall championship trophies awarded to the Junior and Senior Fiddle

Champions and the overall Junior and Senior Accordion Champions will be

based on the following rules:

Junior Fiddle Solo To the player aggregating the highest total marks in the Slow Air and March, Strathspey and Reel classes. (Classes 2 and 3)

Senior Fiddle Solo To the player aggregating the highest total marks in the Slow Air and Slow Strathspey, March, Strathspey and Reel classes. (Classes 4 and 5)

Junior Accordion Solo To the player aggregating the highest total marks in the March, Strathspey and Reel, and March, Strathspey and Reel (Pipe music) classes.

(Classes 10 and 12)

Senior Accordion Solo To the player aggregating the highest total marks in the March, Strathspey and Reel, and March, Strathspey and Reel (Pipe music) classes.

Classes 11 and 13

Players can enter one class only if they so wish, but such circumstances

they would not be eligible for the above trophies.
